Percentage Grade Calculator
This percentage grade calculator keeps things purely numerical: enter points earned and points possible for your raw percent, then pick a target letter to see precisely how many more points it would take to get there. No letter-grade lookup tables, no fluff — just the percent you have and the gap to the grade you want, which makes it ideal for planning the rest of a term.

How it was calculated
- Percent: 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84.0%.
- For A (90%): 90% × 50 = 45.0 pts needed total.
- Gap: 45.0 − 42 = 3.0 → 3 pts (rounded up).
How it works
The raw percent is (points earned ÷ points possible) × 100 — the fraction of available points you captured.
Points needed for a target letter solves backwards: the target percent times points possible gives the total points that letter requires; subtract what you already earned and round up to a whole point.
If the gap is zero or negative, you have already reached the target — the calculator reports 0 rather than a negative number.
Worked examples
42 of 50, aiming for an A
Percent = 84%. An A needs 90% of 50 = 45 points; you have 42, so the gap is exactly 3 points. Every point from here is worth 2 percent.
30 of 50, aiming for a C
Percent = 60%. A C needs 70% of 50 = 35 points, so you need 5 more points. Note the target is still reachable — unlike chasing an A, which would need 15.
How to measure
- Use the same point totals your gradebook uses — a 50-point quiz and a 100-point test must not share one "possible" value.
- Enter cumulative points (everything so far) rather than one assignment if you want the gap for the whole category.
- The target cutoffs here are the standard 90/80/70/60; if your course differs, mentally shift the goalposts.
- Recompute after each graded item — the "points needed" number shrinks fast as you bank points.
Assumptions & limitations
Planning estimate
- Target thresholds use the standard US scale (A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60); plus/minus systems are not modeled.
- Remaining points are assumed to be fully earnable — the gap math does not discount for difficulty.
- Points are treated as whole units for the "needed" figure (rounded up), matching how credit is awarded.
- This is a raw percent tool: no curving, weighting, or dropped scores are applied.
Frequently asked questions
Divide earned points by possible points and multiply by 100. With 42 of 50, that is 84%. Pick a target letter above and the calculator also tells you how many more points that letter requires.
An A needs 90% of the total points. On a 50-point scale that is 45 points — with 42 banked, you need 3 more. The general rule: (0.90 × possible) − earned, rounded up.
Then "points needed" shows 0. The calculator never reports a negative gap — once the target percent is reached or exceeded, there is nothing left to earn for that letter.
Because grades are awarded in whole (or half) points, and 2.3 more points will not actually buy the letter — you need the full 3. Rounding up keeps the target honest.
Yes, if you enter cumulative category points: total earned across all assignments divided by total possible so far. Just remember unweighted categories should not be mixed into one pool.
