Fencing Calculators

Fence projects are linear feet plus posts, and the posts are where most DIY estimates go wrong. This calculator converts your fence line into pickets or panels, posts, concrete for the footings, and rails — with gate openings handled separately. Walk the property line with a tape measure, enter the numbers, and get a complete shopping list.

Fencing FAQs

A common rule of thumb is one-third of the post's length underground, with a 2-foot minimum for a 6-foot fence in stable soil. In frost zones, set posts below the local frost line to prevent heaving.

Measure each gate opening separately, subtract it from the linear footage of pickets or panels, then add gate hardware and sturdier gate posts to the list. The fence calculator has a dedicated gate input for this.
