Ten percent is the standard waste factor for straightforward rectangular rooms; go higher for diagonal layouts or rooms with many angles and closets. The flooring calculator includes a stated waste percentage you can adjust to your layout.
Measure the actual floor area wall to wall, then subtract permanent fixtures like kitchen islands or built-in tubs. Measure closets separately and add them only if they will get the same flooring.
