Shipping Cost Calculator
This shipping cost calculator estimates what it costs to send a parcel using typical carrier pricing bands. Enter the packed weight, choose a service level from ground to overnight, and pick the distance zone — the calculator combines a base charge, a per-pound rate and a zone multiplier into a planning estimate. Use it to set shipping fees and free-shipping thresholds.
Weight of the packed parcel, not just the product.
Faster service levels cost more per pound.
How far the parcel travels — carriers price by zone.
Estimated shipping cost
7.13
- Base chargeGround (5–7 days) base.
- 4.5
- Weight charge$0.85/lb × 2 lb.
- 1.7
- Zone multiplierDistance factor applied to base + weight.
- 1.15
How it was calculated
- Subtotal: $4.50 base + $0.85 × 2 lb = $6.20.
- With regional zone (×1.15): $6.20 × 1.15 = $7.13.
How it works
Shipping estimate = (base charge + per-pound rate × weight) × zone multiplier.
Base charges and per-pound rates rise with service speed: ground is cheapest, overnight the most expensive per pound.
The zone multiplier approximates how carriers scale prices with distance — local costs the least, coast-to-coast the most.
These are typical band midpoints for planning; your negotiated carrier rates and surcharges will differ.
Worked examples
2 lb parcel, ground, national
Subtotal = $4.50 + $0.85 × 2 = $6.20. National zone ×1.35 → $8.37 estimated. A realistic figure to compare against your carrier quote.
10 lb parcel, expedited, regional
Subtotal = $8.00 + $1.60 × 10 = $24.00. Regional zone ×1.15 → $27.60 estimated. Heavy parcels make the per-pound rate dominate the total.
How to measure
- Weigh the PACKED parcel — box, filler and all — on a postal or kitchen scale.
- Round weight up to the carrier's next increment; carriers always round up, never down.
- Measure the box too: large light boxes may be billed at dimensional weight instead.
- Pull your actual zone from past tracking data rather than guessing distance.
- Compare the estimate against your carrier account quote before publishing shipping fees.
Assumptions & limitations
Planning estimate
- Rates are typical carrier pricing bands as of October 2026 for planning — always check the carrier for real quotes; negotiated rates, surcharges and dimensional weight are not included.
- One parcel, one zone: multi-box shipments and split fulfillments are not modeled.
- Insurance, signature confirmation and Saturday delivery extras are excluded.
- This is a planning estimate, not a carrier quote or financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
Carriers combine a base charge, a weight (or dimensional weight) rate, a distance zone, and the service speed. This calculator models that as (base + per-lb × weight) × zone multiplier using typical bands — your exact quote comes from the carrier.
Carriers bill bulky light parcels by volume: (length × width × height) ÷ a dimensional factor (often 139 for domestic air). If dimensional weight exceeds actual weight, you pay the higher one. Measure boxes, not just products.
Set it a little above your average order value so customers add items to qualify — but first know your average shipping cost per order with this calculator, so the threshold lifts baskets without erasing margin.
Exact (live-rate) shipping is fairest but can surprise customers at checkout; flat rate is simpler and converts better if you price it near your average cost. Many stores blend: flat rate under a threshold, free above it.
Because moving a parcel 2,500 miles costs more in fuel, handling and time than moving it 50 miles. Zones group destination ZIP codes by distance from origin — the single biggest cost driver after weight and speed.
