High School GPA Calculator

This high school GPA calculator mirrors how most high schools report grades — straight A through F letters, equal weight per class, one semester at a time. Pick each class’s letter grade for up to six courses and get your semester GPA instantly. No plus/minus fuss, no credit-hour math: just the number colleges see on your transcript summary.

How it was calculated

  1. Points: A=4, A=4, B=3, C=2, B=3, A=4.
  2. GPA: 20 ÷ 6 = 3.333.

How it works

Each class maps to whole points — A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0 — and the GPA is the plain average of those six numbers.

Straight letters (no plus/minus) match how most US high schools record semester grades, which is why this calculator skips the in-between values colleges use.

Because every class counts equally, raising any single grade by one letter (say C to B) always lifts the GPA by the same amount: 1 ÷ 6 ≈ 0.167.

Worked examples

A, A, B, C, B, A

Points: 4 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 20; 20 ÷ 6 = 3.333 GPA. The single C costs 0.167 compared with a B there.

Straight-A semester

Six As = 24 points ÷ 6 = 4.000 GPA — the ceiling on the unweighted scale. One B would drop it to 3.833.

How to measure

  • Use the semester letter on the report card, not the running percent in the gradebook portal.
  • If your school reports plus/minus (B+), either round to the straight letter your transcript shows or use the standard GPA Calculator.
  • Count each semester separately — fall and spring are two GPAs, later combined with the CGPA Calculator.
  • Exclude pass/fail electives and audited classes; they do not factor into GPA.
  • For weighted (honors/AP) versions of this, use the Weighted GPA Calculator instead.

Frequently asked questions

Most convert each semester letter to points (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0) and average them. With grades of A, A, B, C, B, A that is 20 ÷ 6 = 3.33. Schools with plus/minus or weighted honors systems adjust the point values.

It varies widely: community colleges often admit at any GPA, state universities commonly look for 2.5–3.0+, and selective schools typically want 3.7+. Admissions also weigh course rigor, trends, and test scores alongside the number.

Yes — it counts in your cumulative GPA exactly like any other year. An upward trend helps, but early grades are never erased, so strong freshman and sophomore years build a cushion for tougher junior-year courses.

Unweighted caps at 4.0 with straight letters, which is what this calculator does. Weighted adds bonuses for honors/AP classes on a 5.0 scale. Colleges often recalculate both to their own standard, so report whichever your transcript shows.

On a six-class semester, each letter step is worth 1 ÷ 6 ≈ 0.167 GPA points. One B among As gives 3.833 instead of 4.000. The damage shrinks as you accumulate more semesters in the cumulative average.
