Semester Grade Calculator
This semester grade calculator averages your individual course grades — up to six — into a single semester average with a letter grade. Pick how many courses you are taking and enter each course’s percent grade; blank fields are ignored, so partial semesters work too. It is the quickest way to see your overall standing before report cards, probation checks, or scholarship reviews.
Only this many course fields are shown.
Percent grade for the first course.
Percent grade for the second course.
Percent grade for the third course.
Percent grade for the fourth course.
Percent grade for the fifth course.
Percent grade for the sixth course.

How it works
The semester average is the plain arithmetic mean: add every entered course grade and divide by the number of courses entered.
Blank fields are skipped entirely — they neither add points nor inflate the divisor — so a half-finished semester still averages correctly.
The letter grade uses the standard US scale: A for 90% and up, B for 80–89%, C for 70–79%, D for 60–69%, F below 60%.
Worked examples
Four courses: 92, 85, 78, 90
Sum = 345; 345 ÷ 4 = 86.25%, a B. The 78 is the clear drag — raising it to an 88 would lift the semester to 88.75%.
Six courses mid-semester
100, 95, 88, 92, 76, 84 → sum 535 ÷ 6 = 89.17%, a B. One strong final in the 76 course could tip the whole semester into A territory.
How to measure
- Use final or current percent grades per course — do not mix percents with letter grades or GPA points.
- Leave courses blank rather than entering 0 for classes with no grades yet; a 0 would crater the average.
- If a course is pass/fail, exclude it — pass/fail results do not belong in a percent average.
- For courses with different credit hours, this equal-weight average is an approximation; the College GPA Calculator weights by credits.
- Update the numbers as finals come in; the average moves fast when only a few courses are entered.
Assumptions & limitations
Planning estimate
- Every course counts equally regardless of credit hours — a 1-credit lab and a 4-credit lecture pull the same weight here.
- Only numeric percent grades are averaged; letter grades must be converted to percents first using your school’s scale.
- Blank fields are ignored, but an explicit 0 is treated as a real failing grade and included.
- The letter shown is the standard US scale (A 90+, B 80+, C 70+, D 60+, F below 60); institutional cutoffs may differ.
Frequently asked questions
Add up the percent grades for all your courses and divide by the number of courses. With grades of 92, 85, 78, and 90, that is 345 ÷ 4 = 86.25%. This calculator does it for up to six courses and skips any you leave blank.
No. A semester average is a percent mean of course grades; GPA converts each course to grade points (A = 4.0, etc.), often weighted by credit hours. Use this tool for a quick percent snapshot and the GPA Calculator when credit hours matter.
No — leave them out. Pass/fail courses carry no percent grade, and forcing one in (as 100 or 0) would distort the average. Most schools exclude them from GPA-style calculations too.
Enter what you have and leave the rest blank; blanks are ignored, not counted as zero. The result is the average of your graded courses so far — a running snapshot, not a final answer.
Not in this calculator — every course counts equally. If your school adds weighting for advanced courses, use the Weighted GPA Calculator instead, which applies honors and AP bonuses.
