Reading Time Calculator

This reading time calculator converts any word count into minutes and hours of reading. Pick a preset pace — slow (150 wpm), average (225 wpm), or fast (300 wpm) — or enter your own measured speed, and get the total time plus how many 30-minute reading sessions it will take. Use it to plan study schedules, book deadlines, and daily reading habits.

How it was calculated

  1. Pace: 225 words per minute (average).
  2. Minutes: 50,000 ÷ 225 = 222.2.
  3. Hours: 222.2 ÷ 60 = 3.70; sessions: 222.2 ÷ 30 → 8 (rounded up).

How it works

Reading time in minutes is simply word count ÷ words per minute — a 60,000-word book at 225 wpm takes 266.7 minutes.

Hours divide minutes by 60, and 30-minute sessions divide minutes by 30 and round up, since a partial session still costs you a sitting.

Preset paces reflect common benchmarks: 150 wpm for careful study reading, 225 wpm for an average adult, 300 wpm for light fiction.

Your true pace varies with text difficulty, so measure it on similar material with the words-per-minute calculator for assignments that matter.

Worked examples

60,000-word novel at average pace

60,000 ÷ 225 = 266.7 minutes, or 4.44 hours. In 30-minute sittings that is 9 sessions (266.7 ÷ 30 = 8.9, rounded up) — about nine evenings of reading.

12,000-word research paper, slow study pace

12,000 ÷ 150 = 80 minutes, or 1.33 hours. That is 3 thirty-minute sessions (80 ÷ 30 = 2.67, rounded up) — plan three focused blocks with breaks.

How to measure

  • Get the word count from the book's product page, your e-reader stats, or paste the text into the character counter's word count.
  • Time yourself on the same kind of material you plan to read — textbook pace and novel pace differ wildly.
  • Add 10–15% for note-taking or re-reading when the reading is for study, not pleasure.
  • Break totals into 25–30 minute sessions; comprehension drops in marathon sittings.
  • If a deadline looms, work backward: sessions needed × 30 minutes tells you the latest start date.

Assumptions & limitations

Frequently asked questions

Most studies put average adult silent reading around 200–250 words per minute for non-fiction, which is why this calculator defaults to 225 wpm. College-level textbook reading is typically slower (150–200 wpm), while light fiction can reach 300 wpm for practiced readers.

A typical page holds about 250–300 words, so 300 pages is roughly 75,000–90,000 words. At 225 wpm that is 5.5–6.7 hours of reading — about eleven to fourteen 30-minute sessions.

Read normally for exactly 2 minutes from the kind of material you plan to read, count the words you covered, and divide by 2. Repeat on a second passage and average the two. Enter the result as a custom speed here.

Approximately. Audiobook time depends on narration speed (usually 150–160 wpm at 1×), and heavily illustrated textbooks read slower than their word count suggests. For study reading, use the slow preset or add a 15% buffer.
