Essay Word Counter

This essay word counter estimates how many words your pages hold without counting them one by one. Enter the page count and pick the format — handwritten, double-spaced typed, or single-spaced typed — and get an estimated word total plus character counts with and without spaces. Ideal for checking you are near an assignment's word target before you start typing it up.

Half pages allowed — e.g. 2.5 for two and a half pages.

Estimated words

1,250

Estimated wordsPages × ~250 words/page.
1,250
Characters (no spaces)At ~5.1 characters per word.
6,375
Characters (with spaces)At ~6.1 characters per word.
7,625

How it was calculated

  1. Words: 5 pages × 250 words/page = 1,250.
  2. Characters (no spaces): 1,250 × 5.1 = 6,375.
  3. Characters (with spaces): 1,250 × 6.1 = 7,625.

How it works

Estimated words = pages × words-per-page for the chosen format: ~250 for handwritten or double-spaced typed pages, ~500 for single-spaced typed pages.

Character counts multiply words by average English word length — 5.1 characters excluding spaces, 6.1 including the following space.

Half pages are supported because drafts rarely end on full pages; the estimate scales linearly.

These are format averages, so treat the result as a planning estimate and verify against the assignment's actual word-count requirement with a real counter.

Worked examples

5 double-spaced pages

5 × 250 = 1,250 estimated words. Characters: 1,250 × 5.1 = 6,375 without spaces, or 1,250 × 6.1 = 7,625 with spaces — comfortably above a 1,000-word minimum.

3 handwritten pages

3 × 250 = 750 estimated words. Characters: 750 × 5.1 = 3,825 without spaces; 750 × 6.1 = 4,575 with spaces. Large handwriting could run 20–30% lower.

How to measure

  • Count only full writing area — skip title blocks, headers, and large diagrams when estimating pages.
  • Handwriting varies enormously: small neat script can exceed 300 words/page, large script may hold under 200.
  • For typed drafts, check your word processor's font size and margins match the ~250/500 assumptions (12pt, 1-inch margins).
  • When an assignment has a strict word range, draft to 90% of the estimate here, then verify with an exact counter.
  • Quoted material and references count toward most word limits — include those pages too.

Frequently asked questions

Roughly 250 words for average handwriting on lined paper. Small, dense handwriting can reach 300+, while large script may hold only 175–200. This calculator uses 250 as the planning average.

About 250 words at standard 12pt font with 1-inch margins. A single-spaced page at the same settings holds about 500 words. These are the figures this estimator uses.

It varies by assignment — always follow the rubric. When a word count is given, this tool helps you plan how many pages to draft; when pages are given, it tells you roughly how many words that means. Verify the final draft with an exact counter.

Estimation is for planning — deciding how much to write before you start, or checking a handwritten draft against a word target without retyping it. Final submissions should always be verified with an exact word count.
