Shopify Fee Calculator

This Shopify fee calculator computes what Shopify takes from each order under the October 2026 plans. Pick your plan — Basic, Grow, or Advanced — and whether you use Shopify Payments or a third-party gateway, and it applies the right card rate (2.9%, 2.7%, or 2.5% plus $0.30) and the gateway surcharge (2%, 1%, or 0.6%) when applicable. You get the per-order fee total and what you keep, so plan upgrades can be judged on real numbers instead of sticker prices.

Card rates drop as plans go up.

The total the customer pays on this order.

Third-party gateways add Shopify’s extra fee on top of the gateway’s own charges.

How it was calculated

  1. Basic: 2.9% × $75.00 = $2.18 + $0.30.
  2. Total Shopify fees: $2.48. You keep $72.53 per order.

How it works

Per-order fees = plan card rate × order value + $0.30, plus the third-party gateway surcharge (plan % × order value) when you do not use Shopify Payments.

Card rates: Basic 2.9%, Grow 2.7%, Advanced 2.5% — always plus $0.30. Gateway surcharges: 2% Basic, 1% Grow, 0.6% Advanced, charged on top of whatever the gateway itself charges.

The monthly plan cost ($39/$105/$399) is separate from per-order math — divide it by monthly orders to get its per-order weight.

Upgrading plans only pays when the card-rate savings across your volume exceed the monthly price jump.

Worked examples

$75 order on Basic with Shopify Payments

Card fee = 2.9% × $75 = $2.18, plus $0.30 = $2.48 total. You keep $72.53 per order — Shopify’s take is the lowest of any option here because there is no marketplace commission.

$200 order on Advanced with a third-party gateway

Card fee = 2.5% × $200 = $5.00 + $0.30, plus the 0.6% gateway surcharge = $1.20. Total = $6.50; you keep $193.50. The gateway’s own processing fees would sit on top of this.

How to measure

  • Use your average order value, not your cheapest product — the $0.30 fixed fee punishes small orders disproportionately.
  • If you use PayPal, Stripe, or another gateway, select third-party: the surcharge is real and often forgotten.
  • Compare plans on total cost: (per-order fees × orders) + monthly fee, not on the monthly sticker alone.
  • International cards add about 1% on top — model it if a large share of customers is abroad.
  • In-person sales use different rates (2.6% + $0.10 on Basic); this calculator covers online orders.

Assumptions & limitations

Frequently asked questions

With Shopify Payments: 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, 2.7% + $0.30 on Grow, 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced. There is no marketplace commission — that is the whole per-order take, which is why Shopify keeps more per sale than Etsy, Amazon, or eBay. Using a third-party gateway adds 2%, 1%, or 0.6% respectively on top.

No, but skipping it costs you the gateway surcharge (2% on Basic) plus whatever the external gateway charges — often making it the most expensive option. Shopify Payments is available in most major markets; where it is unavailable, factor the surcharge into every price.

When the card-rate savings beat the $66/month jump. The rate drops 0.2 points (2.9% → 2.7%), so you need about $33,000 in monthly volume ($66 ÷ 0.002) for the upgrade to pay for itself on rates alone. Grow also adds lower gateway surcharges and better shipping discounts, which move the real crossover lower.

Shopify Payments’ percentage applies to the total charge, including shipping and taxes — it is a payment processing rate, not a marketplace commission. The practical effect is the same as marketplaces here: bake shipping into your margin math rather than treating it as fee-free.
